A blocked Saniflo can cause the toilet to back up, drain slowly or stop pumping waste away altogether. The most common causes are wipes and foreign objects, limescale, restricted discharge pipework or installation issues.

If your Saniflo keeps blocking, the cause is often something that can be prevented once it has been identified.

Most Common Causes of Saniflo Blockages

Saniflo blocked right now?

Stop flushing the toilet repeatedly, avoid chemical drain unblockers and switch off the electrical supply before attempting any inspection. If the blockage cannot be safely identified, call a Saniflo engineer.

How to Prevent Saniflo Blockages

Most Saniflo blockages are caused by things going into the unit that should never be flushed.

Our engineers regularly recover wipes, sanitary products, toothbrushes, razors, jewellery, toys, bottle tops and other foreign objects from blocked macerators.

Once flushed, these can become caught in the blades or discharge pipework and stop the unit working properly.

The simple rule is: human waste and normal toilet paper only.

Can You Unblock a Saniflo Yourself?

You can

Remove something that is clearly visible in the toilet bowl without flushing again. If you need to inspect further, switch off the electrical supply first.

Avoid

Repeatedly flushing the toilet, using chemical drain unblockers or dismantling the macerator unless you know what you are doing.

Beyond accidental drops, many blockages result from items being intentionally flushed that should never go down any toilet, including a Saniflo unit.

These are the most common reasons a Saniflo keeps blocking in everyday use: wipes (even “flushable” ones), sanitary products, condoms and hair. These items can quickly lead to blockages and failures. While the flushing rules are similar to standard toilets, Saniflo systems react faster and more severely when misused.

Your toilet is not a waste disposal. The same items that block conventional drains can cause problems much faster when they pass through a macerator.

There’s little difference between a Saniflo and a conventional toilet in terms of what you can flush. The difference is, the consequences of flushing the wrong thing are often more immediate with a macerator.

RELATED: SANIVITE

Why Does My Sanivite Block or Smell?

The Sanivite is a wastewater pump designed for grey water from sinks, showers and washing machines. It is not a waste disposal unit or grease trap.

When servicing or repairing Sanivite units, we commonly find:

  • Food scraps and debris
  • Grease lining the discharge pipework
  • Restricted or blocked pipes
  • Odours caused by waste build-up

Over time, grease can reduce the internal diameter of the pipework, leading to slow drainage, backups and unpleasant smells.

When a Blocked Saniflo Needs an Engineer

Engineers travelled through the snow

If your Saniflo keeps blocking despite correct use, there may be a deeper issue with the macerator.

Our engineers can:

  • Remove blockages safely
  • Recover foreign objects
  • Check the macerator and discharge pipework
  • Service and repair Saniflo systems
  • Replace failed parts where required

With over 35 years’ experience, Pumpmaster is an authorised Saniflo Service Agent specialising in servicing and repairs.

Before you book any repair, check whether the engineer is listed here:

If they’re not on the list, they’re not approved, and that blocked Saniflo could end up costing more…
