We’ve already covered what to do when things go wrong in our Saniflo Troubleshooting Guide. But what about preventing those issues in the first place?

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the most important Saniflo dos and don’ts — from proper installation to everyday usage — to help you avoid breakdowns and keep your macerator performing at its best.

How do you avoid common Saniflo problems?

The best way to avoid Saniflo problems is to only flush toilet paper and waste, descale the unit regularly, and avoid harsh chemicals like bleach. Most issues are caused by:

  • flushing wipes or foreign objects
  • lack of regular descaling
  • poor installation or pipework

Saniflo Dos and Don’ts: Key Tips for Longevity

A Saniflo macerator is a compact but complex system. Treating it like a standard toilet or neglecting basic care can lead to breakdowns, flooding, or even costly replacements. By following these simple dos and don’ts, you’re helping to protect your investment, reduce repair costs, and ensure your system stays fully operational for years to come.

Saniflo Dos:

Looking after your Saniflo doesn’t need to be complicated. Follow these key dos to ensure reliable, long-lasting performance from your macerator system.

✅ 1. Choose the Right Saniflo Model

Start with the correct unit for your needs. Installing the wrong model can lead to overloading, early wear, and failure. Not sure what you need? Read our guide to choosing the right Saniflo model.

✅ 2. Use the Correct Pipework

Using the wrong pipe diameter or unsuitable materials can put stress on the macerator motor and lead to frequent clogs or breakdowns. Saniflo systems typically require small-bore pipework — usually 22mm or 32mm depending on the model — and should be pressure-rated for waste discharge. Avoid flexi-hose or makeshift connections, which can trap debris and reduce efficiency. Check our 10 Golden Rules for installation best practice.

✅ 3. Optimise Pipe Gradients

A proper gradient ensures smooth flow and prevents waste from building up in the pipework. Too steep or too flat, and you’re asking for blockages.

✅ 4. Regularly Maintain and Descale

Over time, limescale and debris can build up inside the Saniflo unit, especially in hard water areas. This can affect performance, reduce flow, and eventually damage internal components like the motor or membrane.

Using Saniflo’s specially formulated descaler every few months will help:

  • Break down mineral deposits
  • Prolong unit lifespan
  • Maintain efficient performance
  • Prevent common breakdowns

The cleanser is ideal for Saniflo units, won’t harm septic tanks, and comes in a 5-litre bottle for multiple treatments. See our guide on how to descale a Saniflo for full instructions.

✅  5. Protect Against Freezing

If your unit’s in an outbuilding or loft, lag those pipes! Frozen waste pipes can split and cause chaos. See our Saniflo freezing prevention tips.

✅ 6. Install a Saniflo Alarm

These devices provide an early warning when something’s not right, helping you catch issues before they cause further damage.

✅ 7. Act on Noisy Operation Quickly

If your macerator’s suddenly louder, it’s a warning sign. Don’t wait — contact Pumpmaster and one of our approved Saniflo engineers can take a look before it becomes a breakdown.

✅ 8. Make Sure Everyone’s on the Same Page

Make sure your household knows what can and can’t go down a Saniflo — especially kids and guests.

Saniflo Don’ts:

Not every toilet rule applies to a Saniflo. These don’ts are just as important as the dos when it comes to protecting your system.

❌ 1. Don’t Use Bleach or Harsh Chemicals

Bleach and other aggressive cleaning products might seem like a quick fix, but they can corrode rubber seals and internal parts within your Saniflo unit. Over time, this can cause leaks, operational faults, and expensive damage – especially to components like the level sensing Membrane and seals. Stick to cleaners that are specially designed for macerators to avoid unnecessary repairs.

Saniflo descalers are safe, effective, and specifically formulated to protect your unit long-term.

❌ 2. Don’t Flush Foreign Objects

Saniflo systems are designed to handle human waste and toilet paper only. Flushing sanitary towels, tampons, baby wipes (even so-called ‘flushable’ ones), cotton buds, or other foreign objects can cause the macerator blade to jam or the pump to clog. These issues require a professional to disassemble and clean the unit – or even replace components.

Keeping a small sanitary container next to the toilet provides a convenient alternative for disposing of items that shouldn’t go into a Saniflo.

We offer free ‘Do Not Flush’ stickers to help prevent costly blockages. Just email your address to info@pumpmaster.co.uk with the subject line Sticker, and we’ll send one out to you.

❌ 3. Don’t Ignore Strange Noises

If your Saniflo starts making grinding, buzzing, or humming noises, it could be a sign of a blocked blade, worn motor bearings, or a misfiring switch. Ignoring these early signs often leads to bigger – more expensive – problems.

Possible causes of noise include:

  • Blocked or damaged macerator blades
  • Faulty microswitch keeping the motor running
  • Air in the system or pump cavitation

If in doubt, switch off the unit, isolate the water and contact Pumpmaster. We can diagnose and fix the problem before it causes a full breakdown.

❌ 4. Don’t DIY an Installation Without Research

The majority of the issues we see during repairs can be traced back to poor or rushed installation. Before attempting any DIY install, make sure you understand:

  • The correct pipe diameters and gradients
  • Maximum run lengths and vertical lift
  • The need for proper ventilation and access

If you’re unsure about any of these requirements, it’s worth doing thorough research before proceeding. Follow our Saniflo installation advice to avoid the most common pitfalls.

❌ 5. Don’t Put Off Repairs

Even minor issues like a slow flush, faint noise, or a dripping connection can be early indicators of a larger problem. Left unchecked, these can quickly escalate into complete motor failures, backflows, or water damage. If you notice anything unusual, it’s better to have it looked at early. Timely intervention can save you the cost and hassle of major repairs. Contact Pumpmaster for fast, professional service.

❌ 6. Don’t Overload the Unit

Every Saniflo model is built for a specific type of usage — whether it’s just for a toilet and basin, or a full bathroom setup. Using your unit beyond its intended purpose (like connecting a washing machine to a model not rated for it) can lead to overheating, repeated cut-outs, or total motor failure.

Always check the capacity of your unit and avoid excessive back-to-back flushes or rapid use if your model isn’t designed for it. If you’re unsure whether your setup is suitable, get in touch with us for advice.
